Epdm Coatings

Rubber is the only material that people think of as being absolutely waterproof which has been proven with its use in vast range of products from Wellington boots, gloves to diving suites. EPDM is an extremely robust material, is extremely resilient to puncture or penetration, is not affected by atmospheric pollution, UV light ozone or acid rain and unlike most bituminous materials, it does not degrade, crack, or become brittle after long periods exposed to the harsh elements of the weather.

Over the years, EPDM has proven its longevity in Artic conditions, temperate zones and tropical climates, in fact, installations carried out in the early sixties are still giving outstanding performance to this day! EPDM rubber membrane, the once only installation is excellent for the flat roof renovation of older domestic roofs or brand new residential or commercial installations, resulting in a total waterproofing covering. Any flat roof will benefit immensely from this modern flat roofing material which flexes with ambient temperature variants and will not split, tear or become porous. It is not only suitable for flat roofs rather it also best fits metal roof, concrete roof, for RV roofs and other roofing types.

The commercial roofing industry goes back hundreds of years and, in that context, there are three “modern-day” roofing systems: EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer), PVC (polyvinyl chloride), and TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin). While they have their own individual advantages, one advantage they all share is that installation does not generate fumes. Emission of tar- and asphalt-based fumes is becoming a major roof-installation issue throughout the country

Properties of EPDM

EPDM is a synthetic elastomer made by combining ethylene and propylene with a diene monomer attached. This polymer (when cross linked) is a very good moisture barrier, resistant to oxidation and UV degradation but its most important property is its ability to tolerate both low as well as high temperatures (form minus 62 to plus 350 degrees Fahrenheit). EPDM rubber is used exclusively for radiator hoses, freezer gaskets and low temperature seals, steam hoses, and rubber roofing membranes. It is also blended with other rubbers to improve their properties, A multitude of products are now better and last longer because of the contribution made by EPDM rubber.

The EPDM rubber is relatively inexpensive, and it may come in very large rolls. Often it would take a large crew of men or mechanical equipment to unroll and manipulate the materials. It is the joint work, and the penetrations which are critical in this system, and the joint compounds, adhesives, and cover flashings are quite expensive and need to be installed with great care and attention to detail. Rare are there roofs with no joints or penetrations, or mechanical equipment on flat roofs, so such detail work is very important when considering an EPDM roof system.

Roof Repair with EPDM Coatings

Roof Leaks, if encountered by EPDM Coatings will give you long lasting waterproof roof. EPDM is one of the most versatile and long lasting materials ever manufactured for outdoor exposure. EPDM coatings have many advantages over other roofing options. It remains flexible at extreme temperatures, can be installed quickly, and resists deterioration from exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

Liquid EPDM Rubber is also a very effective coating for steel especially where it is exposed to a salt environment. It can be applied on roof, gutters, structural steel, air conditioner enclosures, cooling towers, galvanized steel, unit heater flues, smoke stacks chimneys, fiberglass and non porous masonry surfaces. Liquid EPDM Rubber can be applied directly over rusted or weathered metals without the need for costly and time consuming primers.

EPDM Rubber has had a long history of superior performance in hoses, molded products, tires and roofing membranes. For example, the radiator hoses in our cars and the gaskets on our freezer doors are made of EPDM rubber and show the broad temperature range the product can handle. EPDM Roofing Membranes also have more than 30 years of successful history. EPDM is relatively inexpensive, simple to install, and fairly clean to work with when compared to conventional materials. There are not the strong odors and fumes either. The product is very stable and the resulting characteristics of Liquid EPDM such as flexibility, weatherability and chemical resistance are determined by it.

The versatile membrane offers a variety of installation options including fully adhered, ballasted or mechanically attached that deliver superior long-term weatherability and exhibit exceptional wind uplift resistance. EPDM Rubber is the perfect solution for most flat roof problems. When leaks develop in an existing EPDM roof, the solutions are almost always simple. In most cases, repair and reinforcement of seams, flashings, and perimeter solves the problems, stops the leaks, and add many more years of life to your existing roof. Typical life span of a properly installed EPDM Rubber roof is 25 years or more.

Liquid Roof-features and Applications

Posted by: | Comments (0)

EPDM liquid rubber or liquid roof has a successful long history and superior repute in hoses, molded products, roof leaks repair, tires and roofing membranes. No doubt it is a product which is worth to use for roofing problems. It has many distinguishing features, characteristics and applications which makes it prominent among other roof coatings. This article is specially written with the aim of providing a complete insight to this remarkable product. Its composition, properties both physical and chemical along with its applications will be discussed in detail.

Liquid roof is a true EPDM rubber in liquid form. Therefore it possesses all the characteristics and features that are typical of EPDM coatings. Chemically Liquid Roof is a liquid elastometric copolymer rubber, based on a low molecular weight terpolymer of Ethylene and Propylene with a pendant group of Dicyclopentadiene. The cure mechanism of liquid epdm is determined by temperature and varies from active to inactive. Faster cures and slow cures over extended periods of time result in identical physical properties. Broad day-night temperature swings in spring and fall will not compromise the final physical properties of the Liquid Rubber Membrane.

The physical properties of liquid roof are countless. They combine all the benefits of EPDM rubber roofing with the flexibility of using a liquid. Liquid roof coatings are better than many the sheet form coatings commonly used in the roofing industry. It is highly waterproof and therefore is highly resistant to water penetration. It is highly elastic and has the capability of tolerating a very high temperature range i.e. from 300 degrees F to minus 62 degrees F. It is also very strongly resistant to many chemicals; acids, alkalis and polar solvents. It is also ozone and UV stable. Also it is highly reflective which gives it an upper hand over many other non reflective roof coatings because when applied over the roofs it delivers a cooling effect, decreasing cooling costs to a great extent. It is a very durable product and if properly applied, it can greatly increase the life of existing roof materials (particularly roof coatings) and reduce the amount of torn-off roofing waste going into landfills. Its weaknesses include oils, fats and waxes will swell the polymer.

Liquid rubber when applied over a cracked surface not only fills cracks and crevices but will produce an even film penetrating even the smallest cracks and irregularities. The slow curing and non-polar nature of EPDM Liquid Rubber give it outstanding surface wetting properties. This surface wetting feature enables the product to be applied in a single coat over non porous surfaces and still result in complete film integrity.

Liquid roof is highly adhesive in nature and its adhesion increases over time. Polar surfaces such as metal, concrete and wood result in stronger adhesion than non-polar surfaces such as asphalts and single ply EPDM sheet. It is compatible with a large number of surfaces like metal, rubber, fiberglass, concrete, fabric and foam. Liquid roof can be applied with a paint brush, roller or squeegee. It is a one coat application product that results in saving both time and money. It is available in colors like white, black and custom colors. Custom colors are available for orders over 100 gallons.

There are tremendous applications and uses of liquid roof. It is an ideal coating for various forms of roof repair like RV roof repair, metal roof repair, and many more. Liquid roof sticks to the entire types of facades- canvas, plywood, suds, cement, mass rubber, customized roofing, additional roof coverings, strengthen, timber, top tiles, genuine tiles and solids. It is also employed for coating the roofs of newly constructed buildings. It can also be used over decks, pool liners, underground room waterproofing, and channels. Liquid epdm rubber also provides protection to the concrete surfaces of fountains and fish ponds against both the fresh and salt water. Its nontoxic nature and safety for the fishes makes it best for waterproofing pond liners.

Liquid roof, no doubt, is among the best roof coatings available in the market.

There are many Class C Motorhomes out there with a proven rubber roof technology called EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer). This type of roof is on more Class C’s than any other type of roofing material. It has a long and proven track record of protecting many types of recreational vehicles.
If you do a cost-benefit analysis on EPDM, this rubber roof will come out looking pretty good. It is still one of the least expensive roofs; and if properly maintained, it will provide many years of roofing protection.
It will, however, require some attention on a regular basis if you want to achieve maximum longevity. Therefore, a little sprucing up will be required on occasion. With a little bit of luck you will never have to do any more than clean the thing.
The question is, how often should this be done? Well, like everything else out there, it depends. A quote from DICOR, a leading manufacturer of this EPDM rubber roof material, recommends the following: “To maintain your warranty, all that is required is periodic cleaning at least 3 to 4 times per year”.
As a rule of thumb, I want to stay off my rubber roof as much as possible for a host of reasons. Just being up there will track dirt, grime, and grease. This, of course, will mean that I must clean it more often. I simply do not want to grind this stuff into my rubber roof.
This tracking of dirt and grime occurs most often around the ladder. I’ve noticed that when I step out off of my ladder onto the rubber roof; I always step in the same spot each time. It has to do with the hand holds on the ladder. Getting on the thing is sort of a learned technique.I am very methodical when I’m on my rubber roof. Anytime anyone is on top of an RV, safety has to be a priority. Focusing on some task and stepping off the thing is not the way anyone wants to end the day!
DICOR has also determined that there is no need to apply any type of protectant on the rubber roof. However, they don’t take issue with putting a protectant on an EPDM roof as long as it does not contain ANY petroleum distillates.Petroleum causes a blistering effect that raises the EPDM up off of the wood sub frame. When this happens, there is a loss of adhesion. This can allow water intrusion.
Keeping a rubber roof clean is more than just about motorhome hygiene. When you take the grime off this roof, you can more easily inspect and see potential problem areas that could allow water penetration if left unchecked.
However, black mold spots that grow over time on this type of rubber roof are not a major concern. Just clean them off with a proper detergent. If you want, put on a coating of UV (ultra-violet) protectant. The stuff looks like white paint, and it will give it a nice finish.
Keeping your rubber roof clean is the most cost effective way to insure that you will have many fun packed and worry free years using the ole home on wheels.
