Can anyone give me suggestions and opinions on any great wooded/rustic campgrounds in Lower Michigan (west side of the state near Grand Rapids or Lansing) I’m looking for something rustic with wooded campsites, not in the middle of the woods, but not on a public beach with overcrowded campsites. Someplace on a lake, or a close walk/hike to a lake. We have 2 very small children so a little runoff of a lake would be very nice, something not so deep for the kids to play in – not necessary but would be a great +. We want someplace where we can take walks in trails, swim, sit around a campfire and enjoy the peace. Also, small private sandy shores would be great…although I don’t want to expect too much. Rustic though, no golf courses or big pools… c’mon, that’s not camping.

It doesn’t have to have a huge playground either but a small one would be helpful, again…not necessary. Please give your opinions on places you’ve stayed, or places you’ve heard of. THANKS!

Im looking at some places in KY, TN, NC, VA area. Specifically: Louisville, Knoxville, Nashville, Richmond, Roanoke, Raleigh, Durham, Asheville. Im looking a city that is progressive-ish, like Portland but without all the holier than thou-off the deep end types. Things that would be important for me are a good economy (better than Michigan at least), good schools in the city (dont want to live in suburbia ever again), active and interesting culture, good food, nice scenery (mountains, lakes, rivers etc) and proximity to outdoor activities like skiing, hunting, fishing, and camping. If you know anything about these places, feel free to enlighten me, or tell me about a city not listed. I’d would be moving with my wife, and 2 month old daughter, and plan to stay for the duration and raise my family there.
Ian-Want to expand on that a bit? Tell me something about knoxville?

I have gone camping many times and know what I am doing for the most part. I took a survival class in high school and went on a 5 day canoe trip (last night without a tent). I have always wanted to do this by myself but want to do it with a couple friends first. Does any body know where I can do this in michigan? I was thinking the u.p.?

We have a seller that is willing to take zero down on a 30 year land contract. The property is 30 acres (2 15 acre parcel’s), 1 parcel has a mobile home and a pole barn and the other parcel has no buildings. The total sales price is $164,800.00 and the monthly payment would be $1450.00 a month which included property taxes ($1800.00 a year), home owners insurance ($700.00 a year) and interest of 8.5%. If we can convince the seller to take lets say $800.00 a month with a 30 year balloon, what would the balloon payment be? I have looked for an amortization calculator that allows calculations for a 30 year balloon but can’t find one anywhere online. Any help would be appreciated so we can make our dreams come true. We love camping and dream of owning and operating our own campground one day and we are perfectly content with building one from scratch.
