Wild Neighbors: Geek Night at the Academy
Keyhole sand dollar: why the holes? It’s been a while since we got backstage at the California Academy of Sciences. Last Friday evening was Curators’ Night, with various entomologists, anthropologists, and others available to discuss their work, plus guided tours of the collections.

I need a second opinion, issue with neighbors?
Posted by: | CommentsI live in a middle to upper-middle class neighborhood. About a week ago one of my neighbors put a medium sized camper trailer in front of their home. I have noticed that there are people living in the trailer… but this seems so far fetched to me I don’t know what to make of it.
Perhaps these people would be otherwise homeless (bad economy). If that is the case, I don’t want to bother them.
#####HOWEVER#####
There is a background history with this family. They own two homes (cousins), across the street from each other. After the mom passed, the house was left empty. They had a homeless man living in it for a long time. He was acting as a security guard.
I walk my dog every morning and late evening. In time, this man noticed me and began watching me. Soon, he began standing in front of my house. One day, he approached a friend of mine that looks like me. At that point, I called the police.
The police checked his history, which was “erased” and this was questionable to the police. Long story short, the man suddenly disappeared. I thought the drama with these people was over.
One night there were 4 police cars in front of their home.
They have huge moving trucks in their home very often; I don’t know what for.
They don’t fit in with the neighborhood. Every here works business hours and have quite happy families.
I do not want to be prejudice but from what I have seen of them so far, it’s really hard not to be.
Should I not call the city (as I am sure they are breaking some ordinance or can be considered a fire hazard, etc). I really want to mind my own business but the last time I did that, I had a homeless man stalking me.
Maybe these people in the camper are totally decent and safe people. I don’t know. What should I do? Objective third opinions needed. Please don’t be pointless or rude.
Thanks!!!
In a great sense, my dog offers me security. When the homeless man lived in that house (for about a year!), my dog would sit at the window at night and growl like mad. He would get furious. This was before I even noticed the homeless man was standing outside the house he was living in, in the dark. Even now as I’m writing this, it’s hard to believe.
The account with no name: Good point and thank you for bringing this up. I have actually wondered this myself. This family does have too many people living in that house to begin with. I don’t know what to make of it but leaning towards leaving them alone but having the police number on speed dial.
When the homeless man was living in the house, I asked the neighbor that lived in the house across from mine (she sold her home and moved about a month ago). She has two daughters. She told me he used to look at her girls and so she stopped allowing them to play outside.
The neighbors to the left of me moved around the same time. I am being left with very few people to talk to. I live at the end of a cul de sac.
Frustrated with downstairs neighbors?!?
Posted by: | CommentsWe have been having issues with our neighbors below us ever since they moved in over a year ago. Every night we can hear their tv over ours. We can hear the wife screaming and yelling at the husband on a daily basis. We can hear every door they slam, and when they put away the dishes. We can hear everything! This isn’t really the problem though…the problem is that every time they hear a noise from us, they call the police or the apartment manager on us! I have a 3 year old daughter and a 6 month old puppy. I am a stay at home mom and I’m pretty sure the lady downstairs doesn’t work either. So when my daughter runs around during the day or even if the dog walks from the living room back to the bedrooms, the lady downstairs freaks out and calls on us. We were having an issue with our dog barking for hours while we were gone. When we first got the dog, we asked them downstairs to please let us know if they can hear her. Well they never let us know. They started calling the cops and the apartment on us 10x a day on the dog. If they had just come to us first, the problem could have been fixed. We have her barking under control now, I try my best to be as quiet as possible during the day, and yet she still finds reasons to complain. Now she’s making up lies saying that I don’t clean up my dog’s poop outside-which is completely untrue, because before we got the dog I was always upset that there was always dog poop from other dogs in the yard and my daughter couldnt play out there. I wouldn’t do that. She also said that we let our dog deficate and urinate on her patio furniture…??? NO!!! Never happened, our dog has never been on their patio, or even on the balcony above theirs. We contacted the office because I am not going to tolerate someone lying about us. The apartment seems to want to just stay out of it. How can I work this out with her? We tried to go down and talk to her about it, but she wouldn’t answer her door. Any advice? I feel like since we tolerate all the noises they make, they should tolerate ours. It’s not as if we have parties, or our music or tv up (like they do)…What’s their deal?!
I need documentation that trailers, boats, RVs, campers parked in the driveways of an estate-type neighborhood will have a negative effect on Property values as well as the curb appeal.

Neighbors with ugly camper in backyard?
Posted by: | CommentsI live in a nice, homey neighborhood with a committee that oversees issues. According to their guidelines, any trailer like a camper is prohibited on the lot, if it can be seen from the street. Not only can it be seen, but it’s a HUGE eye sore for my family. It has been several months, and we have attempted to appeal to him in any civil way possible. We have even had the committee contact this neighbor and ask him to remove the trailor.. that was a month ago, and it’s still there. I know this may seem silly, but my family and I love spending time in our backyard, and having to stare at an ugly, oversized camper all day is just ridiculous. We have a camper as well, and we pay 100 dollars a month for storage.. I am running out of options, and I’m not sure where to turn at this point. Is small claims court my only last hope? Suggestions are highly appreciated.
At the beginning of my passage, I forgot to mention my neighbor at first. This is a neighbor we have lived by for 20 years.. and he still refuses to understand where we are coming from.
For all those saying I’m a rude neighbor. His RV is 36-39 feet long and YES IT CAN BE SEEN CLEARLY FROM THE STREET ANY WHICH WAY YOU LOOK. IT IS AGAINST THE HOA RULES AND REGULATIONS AND I’VE DONE NOTHING WRONG. Our whole backyard is centered around their side of the yard, and now we have a 39 foot trailor to stare at. Thanks for those who actually gave good advice and F off to those who didn’t.,

What can I do about my neighbors?
Posted by: | CommentsThey’re nice enough people, but they’ve got WAY too many people and cars there. The house is full, there’s three people living in the garage and they have two pop-up campers with people living there too. And they’ve sometimes got as many as ten or twelve cars parked all over the grass. We’re in an unregulated area just outside Cincinnati city limits so they’re not breaking a code that I’m aware of. And they’re buying their house so I can’t talk to a landlord. Any ideas before I do something unwise?
