Problem starting my 1996 Bounder rv…?

Posted by: | Comments (1)

Tonight, I went to start my motorhome and it acted like the battery was almost fully dead. The interior lights worked but the headlights did not. I was even able to easily start the generator. After about 20 minutes messing around with the auxillary start button, it started. Left it running for a half hour and then drove it for 20 minutes to my storage. when i got there, i shut it off,,,waited 5 minutes…then tried to start it. No luck. I think its the solenoid but not sure.
Also, before it started the battery gauge said about 3 volts. just before it started, the gauge jumped to about 10 volts.
Any info would be great.

One of the first things to decide when buying a motorhome is whether you want a new or second hand vehicle. On the one hand, with a new vehicle you get the feeling of being the first to own it and the safety of a manufacturers limited warranty, on the other hand, a pre-owned model can often be picked up with big savings against list price just a year or so after manufacture.

Everyone’s different, but most first time buyers opt for a second hand motorhome as the financial investment is less – and it gives the chance to find out whether motorhoming suits you without being left out of pocket.

Another initial consideration is your budget. Think about what you would like to spend and also what you are willing to spend as a maximum, this gives you a price range to work within and means you’ll be less tempted to overspend.

There are motorhomes available in all shapes and sizes, and to fit all budgets, so think carefully about which type of motorhome suits you best – is it a small panel van conversion or a large A-class or American RV that takes your fancy? If you’re only buying the motorhome for short holidays then a small or medium sized motorhome would most likely meet your requirements, but for those intending on travelling for months at a time a larger, better equipped motorhome may be what’s needed.

Finding a motorhome which meets your requirements can be tricky, and you’re unlikely to find one which ‘ticks all the boxes’ straight away – the key is prioritising your needs. Write a list of things you need from your motorhome, not features as such but just broad requirements you have of your new investment, things such as ‘sleeps 4 people comfortably’ or ‘small enough to drive in European cities’. You can then use this list to figure out which models suit you best and which features are most important to you – doing things this way round ensures you aren’t convinced to buy a motorhome with fancy features you won’t use.

When you’re looking at a prospective motorhome, and particularly when buying second hand, make sure you test out all the features before buying – that doesn’t mean cooking a three course meal, but it does mean pulling out the beds, stepping into the shower area to test its size, opening and closing cupboards, sitting on the sofa etc.

When looking at second hand motorhomes you need to scrutinise the fixtures and fittings even more, making sure you check the water runs properly and all the electrics are working as they should – it only takes a minute to fill up the water tank to test the system, and any person serious about selling the motorhome will be happy to do this.

Never buy a motorhome without seeing the water system, electricity and motor running in full working order, and always go for a test drive which includes roads which you can get up to 50mph on, as some problems won’t make themselves known at low speeds. Don’t be offended if the owner won’t let you drive though as not many people have ‘any driver’ insurance and it’s still the sellers responsibility if anything happens. If you do sit in the passenger seat on a test drive, simply keep an ear out for any unusual noises from the engine, wheels or brakes and an eye on the driver’s hands – are they working hard to turn the wheel? Do the gears change smoothly and easily?

It’s also vitally important that the waste water system is clean and works properly, this should have been done by the seller prior to them putting the motorhome up for sale so get them to show you how the cassette is removed from the toilet unit so you can see whether this has been done – it’s not a job you would want to do after buying!

Make sure you shop around for the best deal, look online at plenty of models but don’t make any decisions until you see the motorhome first hand, no matter how many pictures you look at you won’t get a true feel for the interior spaces until you look around in person. When you’re ready to buy try and use local dealerships with good reputations, that way if anything goes wrong you haven’t got far to go for repairs or advice. It’s also a good idea to check out the insurance costs as you may find some of the larger motorhomes come with larger premiums. Always opt for a specialist motorhome insurance policy rather than a standard motor policy as this should give you more comprehensive cover.

New Self Storage Trend – Condominiums

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Storage condominiums are one of the latest trends in self storage facilities. With a self storage condo, the customer purchases their entire storage unit outright and then is free to do with it what they wish, including renting or reselling it. Similar to residential condominiums, the new owner is obligated to pay association dues to the storage facility. These dues are usually allocated to cover common expenses or kept in a fund to cover future capital improvements.

Storage condominiums have benefits for both the facility manager and the customer. The manager no longer has to worry about collecting monthly rent or providing liability insurance. Their ongoing maintenance duties are usually reduced as most association fees do not include any work inside of the storage unit. The new owner is responsible for his or her own pest control, water damage repair, and fire prevention to protect their own belongings. The customer is free to add their own security systems to their storage condo, but security at the overall location remains the responsibility of the facility owner or management company.

Most storage condos are 14 feet wide and 40 feet deep, with other sizes also available as desired by the customer. Many of them include a residental garage door, complete with opener, for easy access to the space. There is generally 15-amp electrical power already installed in the storage unit, with fluorescent lighting and several electrical outlets. Larger condominiums may be wired for 60-amp power, with the utility bill being sent directly to the space owner instead of the facility manager. Some storage condominium facilities include shared services for use on RVs, motorcycles, and boats. These include repair stations, vehicle washing equipment, and dumping areas for RV waste products.

The unique set up of a storage condominium arrangement can give it some flexibility with regard to city land use regulations and zoning laws. Because they are not rental units, a storage condo facility can often be placed in areas zoned for light industrial use, not just commercial zoning areas. This land is usually much cheaper for the facility owner than it would be to purchase commercially-zoned land. In cities where parking spaces and vehicle storage are hard to come by, purchasing a storage condominium may be more economical than paying parking fees by the day or month.

Despite their high prices, customers are purchasing these storage condominiums because of the flexibility and convenience they give. Since the customer now owns the storage unit outright, they are free to make any improvements they wish to the interior of the space. Exterior improvements must usually be approved by the facility manager since they affect the look of the entire area. Some common interior improvements include epoxy floors, new walls to separate the space, and adding windows or doors. Condo owners with a higher construction budget may even install climate-control equipment for the storage unit. This usually entails adding insulation in the walls and roof, along with either an air conditioner or swamp cooler to keep the temperature down inside the condominium.

Businesses are also taking note of these new storage condominiums, purchasing them for use as off-site file rooms or vehicle and equipment storage. Due to city zoning laws, most storage facilities have provisions in the sale contract prohibiting the operation of a business from inside the condominium itself. They are quite useful in shifting some of the storage space burden out of a company’s primary office, which is probably being rented at a premium rate.

Being able to actually own the storage space gives a business more financing options. It is far easier to obtain a loan to cover the purchase of real property than it is to persuade a lender to pay for the company’s storage rental for the year. The cost can generally be classified as a capital investment instead of a recurring monthly expense on the company’s balance sheet and income statements. Storage condominiums are a natural fit for businesses that use a lot of large equipment or vehicles, such as construction or delivery companies.

Financing the purchase of a storage condominium may be more difficult for a private individual. Many banks have no experience with the concept of buying a permanent storage unit as a real estate investment. As a result, these loans are usually treated as 10-year personal loans rather than traditional 30-year real estate mortgages. There is also generally a large down payment of 20 percent required upon the signing of the loan.

There are now many different options for storage making it difficult for individuals to choose what is right for them. Self storage is an option that has become more popular with every passing year but many people do not know what is so attractive about using a self storage facility. Before you write off using a self storage company find out why they are one of the best options for storing you items these days.

Safety is a primary feature when it comes to choosing self storage. The average self storage facility is built to be a mini Fort Knox with many high tech features designed to keep items safe. The owners of self storage companies are able to benefit from the fact that their clients are responsible for their own moving, packing, and unloading while paying their monthly fees without fail. This gives the owners of self storage companies a bit of extra money to invest in other things. In addition to having the extra money the owners of self storage companies have the motivation as well. No owner of a self storage company wants to be held responsible for thousands of dollars in missing property which encourages them to use high tech security.

Restricted access gates are a common feature on most self storage facilities. These gates stay closed 24 hours a day unless an individual with a proper pass code or other security verification tool drives up. Only when the identity of the individual visiting the storage facility is confirmed can they enter the property. Once on the property there are high fences usually surrounding the entire area of the self storage company’s storage units. This will help prevent any wanders from coming onto the property and breaking into any units.

Along with high fences and gates restricting access most self storage companies use video surveillance to keep an eye on who comes and who goes around the property. Seeing cameras around the property often help to discourage would be thieves from doing anything foolish. If a thief does get bold these surveillance cameras capture the movements of everyone on the facility making it easy for the identity of the thief to be discovered which usually helps with the recovery of the stolen property. Most video surveillance set ups also include alarms which are used to notify the police if anyone does attempt to break in.

While security is a huge reason to consider using self storage convenience is another. Even with restricted access most storage unit owners can access their units at anytime during the day or evening. This makes it easy to move things onto the property or take them off. Now you can move furniture and other items from your overcrowded home or apartment in the middle of the night without your neighbors watching and commenting. Along with the convenience of being able to move whenever it suits you now you can also take advantage of self storage to help avoid clutter around your home.

The average home has tons of items that are not needed on a daily basis if ever. After marriage or moving into together many couples discover that they now have two of everything. This means that they have two blenders, two toasters, two beds, and many other items that may not be usable or able to fit in the new combined household. Instead of throwing these items away and the money they represent use self storage. With self storage it is easy to place important or expensive items aside while guaranteeing their safety. Self storage for these items is preferred to throwing them away since you never know when you might need that extra item or piece of furniture.

Lastly, self storage is a better option when it comes time to move. Many people wait until the last minute to move their things from one home to the next. Usually this happens because move in dates do not always line up with move out dates. Instead of scrambling around trying to figure out how to deal with an unexpected situation move your items into a self storage unit. This will make it easier for you to wait since you will know that your items are well cared for.

There are many benefits to using self storage that should not be overlooked. Self storage makes it possible for you to keep your items out of harms way when you do not need them and easy for you to retrieve them if and when you do.

Using Self-Storage During a Move

Posted by: | Comments (0)

So a move is in store? Congratulations! There are so many items that you need to consider when you are getting ready to move that it is difficult to keep track of everything. It’s a great idea to purchase a small planner or move-planning sheet that will help you organize all the tasks that are ahead of you.

For many of those tasks, a self storage unit will be an invaluable asset.

Sometimes called mini storage – particularly at businesses that offer only smaller storage units – a self storage unit is extra storage space, away from your home or business, that offers you a space to store any items you need to pack away for a period of time.

This kind of storage unit is perfect for short or long term storage, since they are typically monitored 24/7 and provide you with extra security, such as computer-controlled entry, electric gates, and personal locks of whatever strength you wish to utilize.

Preparing for a Home Sale

When you prepare to sell a home, one of the first things a real estate agent will do is walk you through your own home and help you see the home as it will be viewed by potential buyers.

The agent will point out not only dated carpets and curtains, but also the clutter and mess that accumulates through normal life and fails to appeal to potential buyers. The agent will likely suggest that you remove any clutter.

Many times, removing clutter means eliminating extra furniture from living space, cleaning closets and thinning out the clothing and shoes in the closets, and winnowing out children’s toys. If you have an extra car in the garage or an RV or boat in the driveway, the agent will likely recommend removing these vehicles to increase the curb appeal of the home.

You’ll be told to remove any storage boxes business records, tax records, receipts, old magazines or books, college papers, the kids’ artwork from grade school; it should all be removed from the home to add to the visual appeal and roominess.

Some people transfer these items to the garage and fill it so much that the cars can’t fit into it. This defeats the purpose of de-cluttering the home, makes it look like the garage is very small, and creates the feel that the home isn’t large enough to handle all of a person’s belongings.

After a sale, there are many situations that may demand self storage. If the buyer needs to move in before you can transfer to your new home, you’ll need somewhere to stash your belongings. If you are moving to a new location but do not yet have a home, this also presents a difficulty.

The answer to these dilemmas is a storage rental.

What to RentFirst look at how much you need to store. The easiest way to look at this is by boxes or by pickup loads. For example, a 5′ x 5′ storage unit will hold about 1 pickup load of material or about 50 standard file boxes. A 5′ x 5′ unit is 25 square feet (relatively small), so you can figure the larger units based on this standard.

A 10′ x 10′ unit, then, is 100 square feet, or four times as large as the 5′ x 5′, therefore it can hold 4 pickup loads or 200 boxes.

Climate Control StorageDecide if you need climate control storage. Storage units with climate control are in a self-contained building with heating and cooling units to maintain a steady temperature and humidity.

If your items are valuable, sensitive to temperature changes, or irreplaceable, then you may want to consider climate control. You may have a small unit featuring climate controlled storage for photographs, electronic equipment and important tax records, and a larger, less expensive unit for the clothing, books, and toys.

Long Term StorageIf the market is bad or you’re not sure how long it will be before you find a new home, you may want to make arrangements for long-term storage in a unit. This generally means you have limited access to your items, but often at a lower price.

This is an option many people use after they arrive in a new area and still need to find, close, or build a home in the new area.

Remodeling your home can be quite stressful, especially when you are on a budget and you may not know where to put your items for while the remodeling is being done. You could ask a family member but then your items would be in their way and be much harder to get back and put in place. One of your options is to use storage rental. Storage rental is perfect for when you are remodeling your house because not only do you have an area to put the items that were in the part of your house that is being remodeled, but you also have room if you need to store supplies. In addition, you could store other items that you could keep there on a more long-term storage basis.

There are many other reasons to go with storage rental also. For instance, there is the fact that you know that your items will be safe and will be in the same condition as they were when you left them at the facility. There are also many different types of storage that you can chose from depending on what it is that you need stored. The different types of storage that are most commonly used include self storage, climate control storage, mini storage, vehicles storage, RV storage, boat storage and long term storage. There are positives to each side of these storage units and different reasons for each one separately.

The main reason for climate control is if you have food items that need to be stored while you remodel your kitchen or if you have a wine collection that may need to be stored while you remodel you cellar or the area where you store your wine. Wine is a very popular item to collect and there are many different types but there is one thing that is the same no matter what the type of wine is and no matter where it has come from. All while must be stored at a specific temperature or it will over time turn into vinegar which would mean your wine that you put so much work into collecting would essentially be no longer worth the cost you may have paid due to no longer being in good condition.

There are also people who would like to remodel their garages. When a person remodels their garage it can be so that they will be able to fit more inside of it or it can also be for other reasons such as making it the perfect place to store their vehicle or other items that they store in their garage. Many people may have RVs in their garage or vehicles and boats. When you are remodeling your garage the last thing you would want is for any of these items to get hurt making RV storage, vehicle storage or boat storage perfect for you depending on what you own or what was being stored in there. Other people also store items or food in their garage meaning that they may need self-storage or even climate control storage, which was talked about in the previous paragraph.

Any types of storage could be needed but every type of storage could be useful. You may need storage for supplies, the items that you own or other things. You could even not want to through out the parts that you used to have in the area that you are remodeling. Many people may take a bathtub out of a bathroom so that another can be put in when they are remodeling but that bathtub may be bigger then one in another area of the house meaning that they may want to replace that one with that larger one that used to be ni their own bathroom. When you want to do this after the expenses of your own remodeling it may have to wait until you are ready for the expenses that would be needed meaning you may want to put the bathtub in storage so that you will still have it to replace the other when the time comes.

Another part of a house that is commonly remodeled is the bedroom. In your bedroom, not only do you have many items that you own but you also have your bed, your drawers and any number of other items of furniture and you may end up not having a place to pout them during the remodeling which can mean optimizing storage units such as self storage.
