Which trail should I take for a 5-day Arizona primative camping trip?
March 8, 2010 — adminI live in Decatur, Georgia, next to Atlanta, and am planning a solo 5-day primative camping trip in early October within 100 miles of Flagstaff. My criteria are:
–water
–seclusion
–much beauty
–strenuous is OK, maybe preferred
–bonus: good side trails, especially historic ones.
I’ve looked at 3 AZ trail books, & narrowed my choices to 5: Fossil Springs, West Clear Creek, Secret Canyon, Bell, and Kelsey-Dorsey. (BUT, I’m VERY open to other suggestions.)
I’m an experienced backpacker, with little experience in the West. Last fall, I spent 3 days with a buddy at Phantom Ranch–down North Kaibab, back up Bright Angel. 1st time at G.C. & 1st AZ trip ever.
I understand that some of these 5 are popular, but secluded on weekdays, especially in Oct. True? I’d appreciate any suggestions you have–the more broad and detailed, the better. Thanks so much.

For just under $3,000USD, airfare from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, hotels, travel between cities (Bus, Bullet Train, etc. between Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Hakone, and Tokyo), breakfast daily and dinner on the last night, a full-time tour guide, walking tours, sightseeing tours, and entrance fees to several attractions (Nijo Castle, Heian Shrine and Garden, the Silver or Gold Pavilion, Lake Hakone cruise, Meiji Shinto Shrine, a Sumida River cruise, and Asakusa Kannon Temple) is all included. Locale includes 1 day in Osaka, 2 days in Kyoto, 1/2 day in Nara, 1 day in Hakone, and 3 days in Tokyo.
With this in mind, first of all, does this seem like a reasonable price for what is included, and second, how much should I expect to bring for meals, admission, souvenirs, etc.? My initial though was around $600 US Dollars. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

February 22, 2010 — adminI’m going camping in the west virginia hills this weekend and my girlfriend insists I bring a firearm to protect us from both wildlife and humans(I have my CC permit). But i only have a 40 s&w. What would be the best style of ammo to bring? I can’t find a such thing as 40 hunting ammo and don’t know if i should take fmj for penetration in case of a large animal or jhp for more knock down power. any suggestions?
