HUNTINGDON VALLEY, Pa. – The head of a private suburban Philadelphia swim club on Friday defended its cancellation of the memberships of dozens of minority children, saying safety, not racism, was the reason.
“We deeply regret this whole situation,” John Duesler, president of the board of directors of The Valley Club, told reporters Friday afternoon at the entrance to the club in the leafy suburb of Huntingdon Valley.
The Creative Steps camp had arranged for 65 mostly black and Hispanic children to swim each Monday afternoon at the club this summer. But director Alethea Wright said that shortly after they arrived for their first visit, some children reported hearing racial comments, and the camp’s $1,950 was refunded a few days later.
Duesler said the number of children in the shallow section of the pool, many of them unable to swim, convinced officials that there was a problem. “It was definitely an unsafe situation,” he said.
The club’s actions have prompted an investigation by the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission and made headlines across the country. Much of the attention has focused on an earlier statement by Duesler voicing concern that so many children would “change the complexion” or atmosphere of the club, which he acknowledged was “a terrible choice of words.”
“It was never my intention to imply anything in terms of racial makeup,” he said. Duesler said he heard no racial comments from members and that any such remarks did not represent the club’s position.
Wright, however, said the club knew what size group to expect and had hosted a school group of a similar size a week earlier. She said the comments reported by children and the parents’ actions after her group arrived told a different story.
“If they’re open to membership, why were parents pulling their children out and standing there with their arms crossed?” she said.
Meanwhile, the director of another camp that also had its membership canceled said she believes the club’s explanation that numbers and not ethnicity was the reason.
“It was definitely an overcrowding issue,” said Joanne Rosenthal of Storybook Children’s Center of northeast Philadelphia. “It was obviously more than they were used to dealing with.”
Rosenthal said at least half of her 25-member group was made up of racial minorities, and their money was also returned after one visit. But she said she thought the group had been treated “extremely fairly.”
“It’s not a small pool, but two-thirds of it is deep water, which children are not allowed in unless they have passed a deep-water test, so really, only one-third can be used.” Rosenthal said.
Storybook signed up with the private club because city pools were to be closed this summer because of budget cuts, but the nearby public pool did open after all and the children were swimming there, she said.
Wright said several institutions had offered to host the Creative Steps children at their pools for the summer, and she planned to talk to parents to find out where they wanted their children to go.
Meanwhile, the state commission has vowed to expedite an investigation after being inundated with calls from all over the country, according to spokeswoman Shannon Powers.
“It got bumped to the top of the priority list, so were devoting an extraordinary amount of resources to investigating it,” she said. “It’s a matter we would like to see resolved quickly.”

Which of these acting camps would be best?
Posted by: | CommentsI am wanting to attend one of these camps in the summer of 2011, So while I have a few months to decide which one, I would like to at least narrow it down to two of them out of the three I chose.
- YAC (Young Actors Camp)
-SOCAPA (School of Cinema & Performing Arts)
- NYFA (New York Film Academy)
If any of you have attended one of these camps and could tell me about your experience, that’d be great. And please put why you would choose that camp.
Which group should have governed the behavior of the soldiers in these camps?
Posted by: | CommentsRattlesnake Springs was one of the stockade camps where Cherokees were initially collected after being forced off of their land. It is located in the far southeastern corner of Tennessee, near the North Carolina border. Six hundred Cherokees camped at Rattlesnake Springs in July 1838, waiting to leave for the West. More than 4,800 Cherokees waited at camps in this general area before relocation. The final council of the Eastern Cherokees was held at Rattlesnake Springs. Lamentations were pronounced and the council determined to continue their old constitution and laws in the new land.
Many of the deaths attributed to the Trail of Tears happened in the kinds of stockade camps described in the case study. Most of these were caused by brutality from the soldiers in charge.
Answers
The military: few of the camps were close to any other government groups and the Cherokee were powerless to protect themselves.
The Cherokee: they were still on native land and the Cherokee had their own laws and the means to enforce them.
The state governments: most of the laws broken by the soldiers were enforceable only by state officials.
The Congress: the removal acts were passed by Congress and its members were responsible to the Cherokee people.

Will someone please help me out with these girl problems? Long…?
Posted by: | CommentsOk so there’s this girl I really like , she trusts me with pretty much everything but I know she still has feelings for at least one of her ex’s and maybe the other one, but I know it sounds creepy/pathetic but anytime I get a text I hope its her and I get disappointed when its not. Also one thing that describes how I feel about her is the song Smile by uncle Kracker. I’m almost 100% positive that she doesn’t like me back but recently when we hang out she seems a lot more flirty, and also I have dropped tons of hints that I like her but I don’t think she catching on, but I don’t want to ruin our friendship if she does find out that I like her and she doesn’t like me back. What do you all think I should do about this?
Also I was kinda thinking of telling her like that I saw a yahoo answers thing that sounded like something that she’s been through or something like that and giving her a link to one of my questions about her cuz I’m pretty sure she has a answers account, do you think that would be a good way to try and get her to realize?
Another thing that kinda goes with her being a little more flirty is, we’re both in our schools band, and its marching season, she’s in color guard and I play trumpet, on Friday it was our last day of band camp and we had our preview show for the parents that night, and every year after the preview a bunch of the kids go to the local drive in, I’m a junior and I’ve never been and she asked me if I was/wanted to go and I decided to go and she ended up like having nothing to do with me when we got there even though she pretty much asked me to go. I have pretty strong feelings for her but I’m starting to second guess myself which I always do and it always ends up being my downfall. She’s not necessarily a 10 in most peoples books, but most of the time she is to me. She trusts me with everything. I do pretty much everything for her and I’m pretty sure I’ve made it obvious that I like her but I’m not sure. I’ve driven about 10 miles to her house illegally twice to comfort her. But I just don’t think she likes me back and I don’t wanna come straight out and ask her, she also lingers on her ex’s a lot (she’s only got 2), but she really is lingering on her first who just moved to south Carolina (we live in Southern Indiana) and I’m helping her get over it but it kinda annoys me cuz thats like all she talks about anymore. My one fear about with her is that if I get with her somehow is that she won’t actually have feelings for me or she’ll cheat on me with one of her ex’s. I just need help with this situation but none of my friends are really going pretty in depth,We hung out again tonight but this time we wen’t driving but it wasn’t the same distance as before cuz we live in the same neighborhood, but anyways I taught her how to drive a stick and she was pretty good at it (a lot better than I thought she would be). I had so much fun probably the most fun I’ve had with a girl for awhile, we went like all over the county, the last place we stopped before we went home was walmart and I bought her a shirt that she wanted and when we walked away cuz at first she didn’t want me to pay for it but as we walked away with it and went to another part of the store she was saying “I guess its alright cuz you’re like my brother” and I said yeah but I was kinda sad from that point on cuz the same thing was said by the last girl I really liked
