any information on travelling across the US?
Posted by: | Commentsi am currently in my final year of degree in tourism management at home in northern england.after graduation i am hoping to travel the world, starting in america and crossing over, maybe to japan and so forth.i have backpacked only once before on a month long road trip around europe and not done anything on the scale of round the world but i have visited the US a couple of times when i was younger. america is a country which has always fascinated me and im keen to explore from new york westbound.although i have a great interest in american lifestyles and cultures,i have little knowledge of what it would be like for the average british graduate traveller there.
-what type of visa would i need?
-how much money should i take in uk £(or preferably would i be able to find casual work to fund my travels)?
-how expensive is budget accomodation/transport/food?
-where are the best places for meeting fellow travellers?
-are there any specific places i should avoid eg dangerous for travellers,crime,anti-brits etc?
-other than the use of different units and certain words and phrases, are there any major cultural differences i should be aware of?
-do american girls like british men as much as iv heard?
the general route im thinking of taking is starting in new york and heading down the east coast to florida and then across westbound (texas, arizona, nevada to california) although really it may vary depending on prices and if i change my mind over there.id be looking at staying in budget accomodation, hostels or other places where i can meet other people (id be travelling alone).id also be willing to camp providing the weather wasnt too coldor wet.id like to find casual work while im travelling too doing pretty much anything eg helping out at ranches, picking fruit, stacking shelves at supermarkets, barwork etc.
if anybody (particularly brits or americans)who has travelled in america/worked in america/lived in america has any information to help out about visas, prices, places, people, and general living id be very greatful.
Aussie travelling to USA – your suggestions?!?
Posted by: | CommentsMy partner & I are travelling to the USA in August/September 2011 and I’d like some pointers from some locals if possible please… We wanted to do so much but after consideration we have realized that we just can’t cram it all into one trip and are best to really have a good look at a couple of places and if need be its just a good excuse to come back for a second trip.
When flying to USA from Australia, you have to fly into LA before anywhere else so we might as well spend a day or two there to start with. My partner really (for some reason) doesn’t want to be in LA so just thought we could do Disneyworld and universal studios in Orlando…
Please see my “hopeful” itinerary below and let me know if you think I should can anything or add anything… thank you for all your help!
LOS ANGELES – 2 days
-Walk of Fame
-Venice Beach
-Sunset Blvd
-Rodeo Drive
LAS VEGAS – 4 days
-Caesars Palace
-Treasure Island
-Bellagio Fountains
-Venetian Hotel/Casino
-M&M/Coca Cola factory
-Cirque Du Soleil (if in town at that time)
-Mandalay Bay Aquarium (maybe not if the aquarium in Miami is better?)
-Grand Canyon
ORLANDO – 3 days
-Disneyworld
-Seaworld
-Universal Studios
-Ripleys believe it or not
-Kennedy Space Centre
MIAMI 2 – 3 days
-Metro Zoo
-Seaquarium
-Maybe do a Bahamas cruise
BALTIMORE 1 – 2 days
-My partner LOVES NFL and we are hoping once the draw comes out we might be able to catch a Baltimore game as they’re his fav team!
NEW JERSEY – 3 days
-Cape May whale cruise
When in new jersey we will be spending time with family so they are going to do the whole “local tour guide” thing, same goes for New York City below, my dad and his partner are flying straight to LA then to NYC and going down to New Jersey for a week and then onto New York with other family for a week also doing the local tour guide thing… I don’t necessarily want to be in Jersey for a whole week so that’s why I threw Baltimore in there… not sure if a trip to see the whitehouse is worth the trouble?
NEW YORK CITY – 7+ days
-Time Square
-Statue Of Liberty
-Brooklyn Bridge
-Empire State Building
-Wall Street
-Central Park
-Rockefeller Centre
-China Town
-Soho district
-Ground Zero (which I believe has now been reinvented into a memorial park?)
-Staten Island
-Broadway Show?! I hope to catch one..
Any suggestions?!
We have a month maximum
Thanks!
I’m looking for interesting, slightly different things to do when travelling the usa..?
Posted by: | CommentsTwo of us are travelling from new york to san francisco via the south between march and july. We’re looking for things to see/do that will be a little different. I’m all for museums and national parks but I’m trying to find things like hot-dog eating contests and ‘world’s biggest’ stuff. Also how about chili cook-offs? is bull fighting legal?… things that aren’t generally mentioned in all the tourist guides. thanks!
p.s we’re both 19 and therefore can’t drink
Travelling expenses?
Posted by: | CommentsIm am thinking about going travelling…not sure where, or how long for.
How much money do you think i will need to save before setting off…just as a starting point. I plan to do temp work here and there to keep me going and to keep an income so that i can travel to more places, but i will obviously need money for flights, accommodation, etc…to start off with. I plan to start at places where i have family and friends that i can stay with, so accommodation isn’t such a big thing first off, and i would like to try and get hold of a camper van type thing. I would also like to experience the life of people who aren’t so well off, in the way of sleeping and eating arrangements. I just need a rough idea.
Thanks in advance

Question before travelling to Nepal.. :S?
Posted by: | CommentsI’m going to Nepal in a week for a fortnight of volunteer work. The weekends will be spent walking around Kathmandu.
I don’t know what to bring. I’m used to packing my entire wardrobe in a large suitcase but I’m not sure wat I should wear while I’m in Nepal. I thought I’d take a few pairs of shorts and vests but was then told by a friend that that probably wouldn’t be best for walking around in Nepal.
Also, I’m planning on taking my 50l camping rucksack as carry on luggage and a small suitcase. Would I be better off taking a hold-all as my check-in luggage?
Wat sort of clothes should I wear?
Travelling with a shotgun?
Posted by: | CommentsI amd riving around the country in a couple days by myself and I will be camping in a lot of remote areas with lots of bears mountain lions etc… Should I have any trouble driving across the country with a shotgun in the back of my truck for protection when I camp? When I am driving it will be in a case in the back, ammo will be seperate etc… Can anyone think of any problems I may run into? I am going frm NY out to the west and every state in between. I will probably take it hiking with me in certain areas (like montana and other states with large game).
I was attacked by a bear when I was 17 so It’s a huge piece of mind sitting around a fire at night knowing I have some sort of protection.
Travelling in America for 5 weeks?
Posted by: | CommentsHi
My family and I are going to travel around America for 5-6 weeks around June-July.
We would like to visit west America (Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Montana, California ect..) and New York, and possibly Washington D.C.
The only problem is that we have nothing planned yet, we don’t know where to go, what to visit, how to travel (camping car, plane, bus, train ? )
Can you give us some ideas, information and tips ???
Thank you =)
I am travelling to New Zealand in October?
Posted by: | CommentsI am flying from Ireland, I have 1 month to spend there before i go into Australia. I land in Auckland and i want to see both Islands. Would i be better getting a camper van or getting a bus / rail pass for travelling both Islands. Which way would be cheaper. I will be looking for hostels on the way around to.
