Camping spots in western Colorado?
by admin on Tuesday, July 5th, 2011 | 2 Comments
I’m getting ready to drive a loop around Colorado, camping along the way. Are there any decent camping spots near Grand Junction, CO? I’d prefer to keep out of RV parks, and stick to quieter setting. I’ll be accompanied by my girlfriend and dog. Any suggestions? In the vicinity of Grand Junction unless a better location is known. Thank you.

Colorado National Monument is right outside of GJ. There are also several state parks nearby.
If you are looking for free camping, check out the stretch along 18 Road below the Book Cliffs in Fruita. There are several established camp grounds along with dispersed camping along the 18 Road Spur. All of them are free.
I am far less interested in camping at Grand Junction than the central mountains from Vail, Silverthorne, Heeney, Breckenridge Leadville, Aspen. National Monument is desert. I fought fire above the peach groves east of Grand Junction which were only juniper and pinon pine. Consider the high country for wildflowers, tundra, and camping in free wilderness areas.
